Essential Motorcycle Maintenance Checklist

1. Tires and Wheels

Check Tire Pressure

  • Refer to your owner’s manual for recommended PSI levels. (front 25, rear 28 /32 with pillion) most of the indian bikes.
  • Low pressure low mileage and tyre inner parts damage, high pressue prone to damange of stones in the road.
  • Use a quality tire pressure gauge to measure pressure regularly.
  • Underinflated or overinflated tires can affect handling and increase wear.

Inspect Tread Depth

  • Ensure tread depth meets safety standards (minimum 1-2mm, depending on regulations).
  • Look for cracks, punctures, or uneven wear patterns.

Examine Wheel Alignment

  • Verify wheels are properly aligned for smooth handling.

2. Engine and Fluids

Inspect Oil Levels

  • Check the oil level with the dipstick or sight glass before each ride.
  • Change the oil and filter every 3,000–5,000 miles or as recommended.

Coolant

  • Ensure the coolant level is adequate.
  • Replace the coolant every two years to prevent overheating.

Brake Fluid

  • Check brake fluid levels monthly.
  • Replace every 1-2 years, as old fluid can reduce braking efficiency.

Fuel System

  • Check for fuel leaks and clean the fuel filter if applicable.

3. Brakes

Inspect Brake Pads

  • Check pad thickness; replace if worn below 2-3mm.
  • Ensure no oil or grease is on the pads or rotors.

Test Brake Levers

  • Ensure levers operate smoothly and engage brakes effectively.

4. Lights and Electricals

Test Lights

  • Verify all lights (headlight, tail light, brake light, turn signals) are functioning.
  • Replace burned-out bulbs immediately.

Inspect the Battery

  • Check terminals for corrosion and ensure secure connections.
  • Use a multimeter to verify proper voltage (typically 12.6–12.8 volts when off).

5. Drive Chain and Sprockets

Check Chain Tension

  • Maintain proper slack (usually 1–1.5 inches, check your manual).
  • A loose or tight chain can lead to damage or accidents.

Clean and Lubricate

  • Clean the chain with a designated cleaner and apply chain lubricant regularly.
  • Inspect sprockets for wear or broken teeth.

6. Suspension

Inspect Forks and Shocks

  • Look for oil leaks around the fork seals.
  • Ensure the suspension provides a smooth ride without excessive bouncing.

Adjust Suspension Settings

  • Customize suspension settings for your weight and riding style if adjustable.

7. Frame and Fasteners

Examine the Frame

  • Look for cracks, rust, or other damage.

Tighten Loose Bolts

  • Periodically tighten all bolts, nuts, and screws to prevent issues while riding.

8. Exhaust System

Check for Leaks

  • Inspect for rust, holes, or loose fittings.
  • Ensure the exhaust is securely mounted.

Clean the Exhaust

  • Remove carbon buildup to maintain performance and avoid overheating.

9. Air Filter

  • Check and clean the air filter regularly.
  • Replace it if clogged or damaged to improve engine efficiency.

10. Rider Safety Gear

Your maintenance checklist isn’t complete without inspecting your safety gear:

  • Helmet: Ensure it fits snugly and meets safety standards.
  • Gloves: Check for tears and proper padding.
  • Riding Jacket and Pants: Look for wear and tear.
  • Boots: Ensure soles provide grip and protection.

Pro Tips for Motorcycle Maintenance

  • Keep a log of maintenance tasks and schedules.
  • Use quality parts and fluids specified for your bike.
  • Store your motorcycle in a dry, covered space to prevent rust.
  • Follow your manufacturer’s maintenance schedule religiously.
